The Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) was founded
in 1960 and is the main institution in Bulgaria for carrying out research and training in the field of molecular biology and biochemistry. IMB occupies 3500 m2 in a five-story building in the campus of BAS located at the south-eastern part of the city of Sofia. It has also a branch conducting research on biologically active peptides in Blagoevgrad (90 km from Sofia). IMB numbers 140 staff members, 100 of which
carrying MS, MD, Ph.D. or D.Sc. scientific degrees. The senior staff of IMB includes 5 full professors (2 of them are full members
and two are correspondent members of BAS) and 15 associate professors. The average age of the IMB research staff is below 35.
IMB produces 40-50 high quality scientific papers per year published in peer reviewed journals. Besides research, IMB is licensed also to carry out education of Ph.D. students in three disciplines: Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics and Bioorganic Chemistry. Permanently in hosts 25-30 Ph.D. students and releases 10-12
Ph.D.s annually. IMB has also traditional bilateral co-operation with several Bulgarian universities for training undergraduate and graduate (MS) students in molecular biology, molecular genetics, biochemistry and bio-organic chemistry.
